Indy 500 Pit Badges, another extremely collectible item of Indianapolis 500 memorabilia. Pit badges were first issued in 1938 and the badges up to and including 1946 are very scarce and rarely appear for sale on the secondary market. From 1947 onwards the badges were issued in two different metals, silver and bronze. The silver badges were for personnel directly associated with the race and the bronze badges for non-race personnel such as sponsors, reporters, photographers, etc.The value of any pit badge is increased by the addition of a "back-up" or "backer" card, which is a card worn behind the pit badge on race day. The numbers on the card designate which areas of the track the wearer is allowed to access. Getting the winning driver to autograph the back-up card further increases its value.
